Felspar and Opal
Max Bauer, 1904
reproductionpre1931-platerights: pending
Precious opal throws its play of fire beside moonstone and labradorite on Bauer's felspar-and-opal plate.
Why it matters
It preserves a chromolithographer's attempt to fix opal's restless fire onto a still page.
Notice
The opal's red and green flecks are printed as tiny separate sparks, never a single solid wash.
Meaning
The hardest color to keep is the one that keeps moving.
