Topaz and Euclase
Max Bauer, 1904
reproductionpre1931-platerights: pending
Blue, yellow, and rose-red topaz crystals stand beside the rarer euclase on a hand-tinted English plate.
Why it matters
The atlas put accurate gem color into the hands of jewellers and mineralogists who might never hold the stones.
Notice
The rose-red topaz is a coaxed color, drawn from yellow crystal by heat rather than dug from the ground.
Meaning
Some colors are found, and some are persuaded.
