Columbine Ornamental Application
Eugene Grasset (comp.), 1896
reproductionpre1931-platerights: pending
The columbine is taken apart and re-composed into borders and rosettes, showing how one flower becomes a whole vocabulary of settings.
Why it matters
The application plate is the bridge from botany to the bench - the source of much jeweled ornament.
Notice
The five hooded spurs of the columbine resolve into a rosette a brooch could be built around.
Meaning
Nature gives the motif; the craftsman gives it a frame.
